Porsche Listens to Enthusiasts: Manual Transmission Returns to Carrera S (2026)

The Manual Transmission Renaissance: A Victory for Enthusiasts?

The automotive world is witnessing a resurgence of the manual transmission, a trend that has been gaining momentum in recent years. This shift is particularly notable among high-performance car manufacturers, who are responding to the demands of enthusiasts and customers who crave the tactile, engaging experience of a manual gearbox.

One of the most prominent examples of this trend is Porsche's decision to offer a manual transmission option for the 911 Carrera S. This move was largely driven by the high demand for the manual transmission in the 911 GT3, with 80% of buyers opting for the manual over the automatic. This strong preference has convinced Porsche to bring the manual back to the Carrera S, a model that had previously only been available with an automatic transmission.

Timo Resch, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, explained that the high take rate of the manual transmission in the GT3 helped build a compelling case for the Carrera S MT package. He stated, 'We have customer demand for it. And the customer demand that we anticipated and actually saw in existing models in the United States made it kind of a good business decision to offer this model.'

This trend is not limited to Porsche. Other automakers are also embracing the manual transmission, responding to the growing demand from enthusiasts and customers. For instance, McLaren has launched the McL 6GT, a concept inspired by Bruce McLaren's original M6GT, which features a true manual gearbox and hydraulic steering. The company has also expressed plans to produce a production version of the concept.

Hennessey, another manufacturer, has also joined the manual transmission bandwagon with its Blackbird supercar. Despite not being as potent as the Venom, the Blackbird will feature a naturally aspirated V8 engine producing 800 to 850 horsepower. Hennessey aims for a curb weight of less than 3,000 pounds and a zero-to-60-mph time of 2.5 seconds.

The resurgence of the manual transmission is a significant shift in the automotive industry, driven by the passion and dedication of enthusiasts. It highlights the importance of listening to customer feedback and adapting to changing market demands. However, it also underscores the fact that enthusiasts' demands must be backed by action, specifically through spending money, to ensure that automakers take notice and make the necessary changes.

This trend raises a deeper question about the future of the automotive industry and the role of manual transmissions in it. As technology advances and automatic transmissions become increasingly sophisticated, will the manual transmission continue to have a place in the market? Or will it become a niche option, reserved for enthusiasts who value the pure, unadulterated driving experience it offers?

In my opinion, the manual transmission's resurgence is a welcome development, offering a more engaging and rewarding driving experience. However, it also highlights the need for a balanced approach, where technology and innovation coexist with the traditional values that enthusiasts hold dear. As the industry continues to evolve, it will be fascinating to see how the manual transmission's future unfolds and whether it can maintain its relevance in a rapidly changing automotive landscape.
